Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) said on Monday that it had launched Amazon Web Services (AWS) in New Zealand and reiterated its commitment to set up more data center infrastructure in the country.

The company said that it is planning to invest NZ$7.5 billion ($4.4 billion) in New Zealand to construct, operate and maintain its data centers in the country.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon had somewhat pre-empted Amazon’s announcement during an interview on Tuesday.

Amazon’s data center spending is largely in line with the company’s ambitions of ramping up its cloud capacity and artificial intelligence offerings. Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit is at the heart of the company’s AI ambitions.
