Apple’s newly released iPhone 17 lineup is prone to scratching, buyers in China have complained on social media, posting photos of scratches appearing shortly after purchase.
On Friday, many Chinese gadget shoppers shared photos on social media showing scratches on the backs of their new iPhone 17 devices. The deep blue variants of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max were particularly affected, exhibiting scuffs and scratches after just a few hours on display, according to observations at Apple’s Hong Kong and Shanghai stores.
The black iPhone Air model also appeared prone to scratching. Images of damaged display units surfaced on China’s Weibo platform, with the related hashtag becoming one of the top trending topics, garnering more than 40 million views by Friday afternoon.
It remains unclear how widespread the issue is or whether it extends beyond China, which was among the first markets to receive the new iPhone 17.
The iPhone 17 lineup is Apple’s first major redesign in years and features an aluminum shell that the company promoted as a more scratch-resistant finish.
