Artificial intelligence is set to reshape the American labor market, with certain jobs more vulnerable than others, according to new research from Bank of America. The analysis highlights that routine, repetitive roles—whether cognitive or manual—face the greatest disruption.

At the top of the list are fast food and counter workers, retail salespersons, and cashiers, jobs where automation is already creeping in through self-checkout systems and digital kiosks. Each of these occupations faces exposure rates above 4%, far exceeding most other sectors.

Other service-heavy jobs also rank high on the risk scale. Customer service representatives, janitors, cleaners, and stock clerks could see substantial displacement as AI-enabled systems handle scheduling, logistics, and workflow management.

Even heavy and tractor-trailer drivers, along with housekeepers and cleaners, are flagged as vulnerable as autonomous vehicles and smart robotics advance.

White-collar professions are not immune. Lawyers, paralegals, loan officers, and public relations specialists appear further down the list, but AI’s ability to analyze legal documents, generate reports, and process financial data suggests pressure will build over time.

Occupations like tax preparers, telemarketers, and even journalists are also highlighted, given the rise of generative AI tools.

Bank of America notes that while AI will undoubtedly displace some workers, the technology also has the potential to create efficiencies and open new opportunities.

Manufacturing could benefit from AI-driven assembly, and financial services are already leveraging AI in fraud detection and risk monitoring. Still, the report warns that the transition will not be seamless.

“AI’s ability to automate both routine cognitive and manual tasks puts many jobs at risk,” BofA Global Research analysts wrote, adding that ensuring a fair transition for workers remains a critical challenge.
