VodafoneThree, the result of Vodafone UK’s (LON:VOD) merger with Three UK, has awarded a £2 billion ($2.7 billion) network contract to Ericsson and Nokia Oyj (ST:NOKIA) to expand and upgrade its network infrastructure, the company said on Monday.
Under the deal, Ericsson will take the lead, deploying its radio access network across 10,000 sites and upgrading core network components. Nokia will also contribute, though in a lesser role, at 7,000 sites.
The move underlines VodafoneThree’s commitment to delivering on its previously announced £11 billion, decade-long 5G infrastructure plan. That broader investment aims to build out one of Europe’s most advanced standalone 5G networks, with greatly increased coverage, capacity and reliability.
