China’s market regulator said on Friday that Xiaomi (HK:1810) will recall 116,887 SU7 electric vehicles to fix a defect in their assisted driving system, amid safety concerns following a fatal accident earlier this year.
The recall covers standard-edition SU7 models built between Feb. 6, 2024, and Aug. 30, 2025, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said.
Some vehicles may fail to properly detect, warn, or respond in extreme situations when the L2 high-speed navigation assist function is engaged, SAMR said.
"If the driver does not intervene in time, the risk of collision may increase, posing a safety hazard," the regulator said.
Xiaomi is issuing an over-the-air (OTA) software update to correct the faults at no cost to owners, it added.
The move follows a crash in March in Anhui province in which a SU7 operating in assisted driving mode struck a barrier, killing three people.
The accident sparked safety concerns around the car’s vision-based system, which lacks LiDAR, and prompted questions about safety after reports that occupants were unable to exit due to locked doors.
Hong Kong-listed shares of the company slipped 0.4% on Friday, lagging theHang Seng index’s 0.2% gain.
The SAMR has also released draft safety standards for Level-2 driving assistance systems, requiring them to detect driver disengagement and disable themselves if warnings go unheeded. These rules are scheduled to take effect in 2027.
