Qualcomm wins full court victory over Arm in licensing dispute

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) said on Tuesday evening that a federal judge had ruled entirely in favor of the company in a high-stakes legal dispute brought by British chip designer Arm Holdings (NASDAQ:ARM) over an alleged license breach.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware dismissed the last remaining claim in Arm’s lawsuit against Qualcomm and its unit Nuvia, the latter said in a press release. Arm had alleged that Nuvia breached an architecture license agreement with the chip designer.

Tuesday’s ruling comes after a jury in late-2024 found Qualcomm did not breach the license deal and that its CPU cores were properly licensed.

But the jury was deadlocked over whether Nuvia itself had breached its license obligations, which had invited more litigation from Arm. Tuesday’s ruling dismisses that claim.

Qualcomm said its separate lawsuit against Arm over alleged breach of contract remained in place, with a trial expected in March 2026.

Qualcomm and Arm had engaged in a bitter legal battle in the past two years over royalty rates paid by Qualcomm and Nuvia for Arm’s technology.

Nuvia was initially set to pay higher rates before Qualcomm took over the startup and integrated its technology into the chips, pointing to lower royalty rates for Arm.

The legal battle had raised a major question over just how far Arm is able to license its computing tech. The company is a major designer of chip platforms and computing technology.

Tuesday’s ruling now allows Qualcomm to proceed with what it calls its "AI PC" laptop chips.

Arm could not be immediately reached for comment.
