The move comes as tanker traffic through the strategic waterway has been severely disrupted during the ongoing conflict involving Iran, raising concerns about global oil supplies and shipping security.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday called on countries that rely on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz to deploy warships alongside the United States to keep the route open.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said many nations affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the strait should participate in a joint naval effort to secure the passage and ensure safe transit for commercial vessels.
He warned that despite what he described as the severe weakening of Iran’s military capabilities, the country could still threaten shipping lanes using drones, mines or short-range missiles along the waterway.
Trump added that U.S. forces would continue targeting Iranian positions along the shoreline and intercepting hostile boats if necessary to protect maritime traffic.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil exports from major producers in the Persian Gulf. Disruptions in the passage have heightened volatility in energy markets as traders assess the risk of prolonged supply constraints.
