President Donald Trump hosted Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House on Thursday, praising Japan for supporting US efforts in Iran, although the two also shared some tense moments.
Trump said Japan is "stepping up to the plate," contrasting the country's response with NATO allies. He stated the US has had "tremendous support and relationship with Japan on everything."
During the meeting, a reporter asked Trump why the US didn't inform Japan and European allies before striking Iran. Trump responded by asking Takaichi, "Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?" Takaichi did not respond to the question.
Trump said the US doesn't need anything from Japan or other countries, but added it's appropriate for them to step up. He noted approximately 45,000 US soldiers are based in Japan and said the US spends significant money on the country.
Takaichi did not respond to U.S. President's comments but shared his sentiment that Iran can never be allowed to have nuclear weapons, acknowledging Trump's key rationale for starting the war on Feb. 28.
On Tuesday, Trump criticized allies on social media, singling out NATO and naming Japan, Australia, and South Korea. He said the US no longer needed their assistance in the Iran conflict, writing "WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE!"
