According to the report, President Donald Trump has been briefed on the option as uncertainty persists about the whereabouts of Iran’s highly enriched uranium. The concerns stem from the fact that United Nations nuclear inspectors have not verified the location of the material for several months.
The question of Iran’s uranium stockpile has resurfaced after U.S. and Israeli strikes targeted several nuclear facilities during last year’s conflict with Tehran, complicating efforts to track the material.
Before the fighting, the International Atomic Energy Agency had last recorded about 441 kilograms of uranium enriched close to weapons-grade levels, an amount considered sufficient for roughly a dozen nuclear warheads if further refined.
Diplomats cited by the outlet said recent activity near underground tunnels at the Isfahan nuclear complex, where the material was previously stored, raises the possibility that at least part of the stockpile may have been relocated.
U.S. and Israeli officials are continuing efforts to locate the uranium and have drawn up contingency plans that could include sending special forces to secure it if its position is confirmed, according to one official familiar with the planning.
